4/2/2016 – ACCOUNTABILITY FOR POLICE BEATING OF CITIZENS IN ZLATARSKA STREET AND COVERING-UP THE OFFENCE MUST BE DETERMINED

Human Rights Action (HRA) urged the Head of the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office, Ms Ljiljana Klikovac, and the Director of the Police Directorate, Mr Slavko Stojanović, to urgently act upon the Ombudsman’s recommendation and secure identification and prosecution of police officers who have beaten two young men following the protest on 24 October 2015, in Miljana Vukova street („Zlatarska“ street). HRA also urged them to identify those police officers who supported their colleagues – perpetrators of the ill-treatment, to the extent that they refused to process the criminal charge the victims came to file and hence denied them protection in accordance with the law.

HRA considers scandalous that this obvious (recorded) case of police ill-treatment and its covering-up was not prosecuted even without the Ombudsman’s recommendation.

HRA also requested from the Basic State Prosecutor’s Office and Police Directorate to inform the public of all the results of actions in investigations of other criminal offences reported in the context of the political protests from three months ago.

The original letter HRA sent to Ms Klikovac and Mr Stojanović (in Montenegrin) is available here.
