27/06/2010 Press release on the attack on the son of Nebojsa Medojevic, member of Parliament and leader of the opposition political party “Movement for change”

NGO Human Rights Action condemns the attack on the underage son of Nebojsa Medojevic, leader of the opposition party Movement for Change, which took place on 25 June 2010 on the sports court in Podgorica.

We express our utmost concern over the action of the Police Administration, pointing out in its press release already on 26 June 2010 that the incident “had no political background,” and that perpetrators were not aware whose son they have attacked.

Job of the police is to gather information and evidence about the attack and guarantee safety of all citizens, and not to prejudge the results of the investigation of the prosecution by premature exclusion of the political or any other background of the attack. What is also amazing is the “psychic” claim of the police that the attackers did not know whose son they have attacked. Such press release of the Police Administration we consider to be an example of unprofessional conduct, resulting in a serious suspicion about the independence and impartiality of the police force.

We are expecting the statement of the Minister of Internal Affairs of Montenegro on such conduct of the Police Administration, which took the attackers’ side before the investigation even started, protecting those who might have ordered the attack.

We expect for the state prosecution to professionally investigate justified concerns of the parents that the attack on their child could have had political background, as this was the second assault this year on Nebojsa Medojevic’s family, which represents an obvious pressure on the freedom of expression and political activity in Montenegro.
