05/11/2010 Press Release of the Members of the Coalition for RECOM in Montenegro

Members of the Coalition for RECOM (Regional Commission for establishing the facts about war crimes and other violations of human rights in former Yugoslavia in the period 1991-2001) from Montenegro express deep regret over the event that marked the first Regional consultations with representatives of religious communities on the initiative for RECOM, on 4 November in Sarajevo, when the meeting moderator, at the insistence of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SOC) and the Catholic Church representatives, asked the Archbishop of the Montenegrin Orthodox Church (MOC) Mihailo to leave, which he did. Members of the Coalition for RECOM from Montenegro emphasize that these were consultations that the Coalition for RECOM organized with religious communities. MOC is a registered religious community in Montenegro, and its believers and representatives must be respected same as other citizens who enjoy the right to religion. Bearing in mind the civic character of the Coalition for RECOM, it is inappropriate to participate in the discussion based on the rules of the Church and comply with the blackmail of any participant at the meeting organized for the purpose of excluding others who have been invited to the same meeting and made an effort to attend it.

Members of the Coalition for RECOM from Montenegro have requested an urgent meeting of the Coordination Council and an open debate on the issue, with the request to personally send an official apology to the Montenegrin Orthodox Church and Archbishop Mihailo and organize a meeting with him in an attempt to successfully overcome this new situation, in a spirit of tolerance and reconciliation, which are the basic principles of RECOM, and key reasons for its membership.

Coalition for RECOM is the largest regional coalition with 1000 members so far, so it is clear that decision-making within such a large coalition shall not always result in full agreement of all members, and that mistakes and errors may occur. However, the common goal should be above all else, and this includes the recognition of errors and their correction, so that the further work to establish the facts and create a climate for reconciliation in the region is even more intense.
