On the Occasion of Frequented Violence and Threats of Violence

Following an increase of violence and threats of violence from particularly foul motives, such as hatred on national and religious grounds, in the cases of attack on the president of the board of Croatian Civic Initiative (HGI) from Bar Mr. Vladimir Medovic and Mr. Rizo Alković from Podgorica, disrespect of the court, in the case of attack on the judge Hilmi Sujković, prevention of justice, in the case of attacks on the war crime witness, Mr. Slobodan Pejovic, Human Rights Action expresses it’s concern and expectation that the competent authorities will efficiently investigate and sanction the perpetrators of all these events pointing to extreme social dangers.HRA welcomes the effective action of the police and prosecution office in the case of attack on judge Sujković and expects equal efficiency in combating violence and violence threats also in other cases, where the state officials were not under a threat, but important social values, such as ethnic and religious tolerance, justice for victims of war crimes, prohibition of discrimination and freedom of expression.

HRA reminds that the murder of Dusko Jovanovic, editor-in-chief of daily Dan as well as other attacks on journalists in Montenegro have not yet been effectively investigated, which promotes an atmosphere of impunity that encourages further violence.
